Scholarship

Application period opens June 1st and closes October 1st.

At SIGA, we take pride in our commitment to providing opportunities for First Nations people. This commitment is realized through the SIGA First Nations Scholarship Awards. Since 2008, SIGA has provided $25,000 annually in scholarship funds to eligible First Nations students in Saskatchewan.  In 2013 SIGA increased this amount to $30,000.

The SIGA First Nations Scholarship Awards provide opportunities to encourage education and continued learning.  At SIGA, we look forward to providing scholarship opportunities for young people to successfully achieve career goals within SIGA and the broader community.

SIGA SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION

  • Applications accepted beginning June 1st
  • Deadline is October 1st  (midnight)
  • $5000 scholarships may be awarded to students in Information Technology, Bachelor of Commerce (majoring in HR, Accounting, Finance or Marketing), Hospitality and Tourism Management, or to students pursuing a Masters or Ph.D in any field.
  • $2500 scholarships may be awarded to students studying Communications or Electronics.
  • $1000 scholarships may be awarded to eligible students in any other field.
  • Scholarships amounts awarded are at the discretion of the Scholarship Committee (meaning, you may be awarded an amount that you did not select in your application)

ELIGIBILITY

To be eligible for a SIGA First Nations Scholarship Award, the applicant must:

  • Be a First Nations person
  • Be enrolled in full-time program at a recognized institute, or
  • Have proof of residency in Saskatchewan (for non-Saskatchewan First Nations attending school in Saskatchewan, this can mean a copy of a utility bill – something to show you are living and attending school in Saskatchewan.  It can also mean an acceptance letter & transcripts from an educational in Saskatchewan)

STUDENT CHECKLIST

It is critical for applicants to include ALL information required to be eligible for the SIGA First Nations Awards Program.  Applications may be refused if proper documentation is not provided or if application is submitted past the deadline.  All required documents can be attached at the end of the online application process if they are digitized.

Please use this list as your check list for required documents:

  • Letter of acceptance for the upcoming academic school year
  • Most recent transcripts
  • Updated resume
  • Essay — include career goals/objectives and reason(s) why you should be selected (Limit 500 words).  Applicants are encouraged to discuss samples of their participation within the community, volunteer work and how they balance family, work and education.
  • You may include a letter of reference from a teacher or employer should you want though this is not a requirement

APPLICATION TIPS

  • READ the instructions BEFORE you start writing
  • Print out application and do a rough copy before attempting to complete the online application
  • Use clear, concise language to make your points
  • SPELLCHECK
  • Proofread your essay before submitting
  • Add a personal touch to your essay so your essay stands out to the scholarship committee
  • Make sure your application is complete!  You would be surprised how many applications are declined because they are incomplete!
  • Now that you have an essay complete, save it and use it to apply for other scholarships out there!

Employees of SIGA are not eligible to receive a scholarship, as SIGA has other programs in place for employees. Children and family members of employees are welcome to apply

SCHOLARSHIP DEFINITIONS

SIGA endeavours to have processes that are fair and equitable to all people keeping in mind its SHRC, E-95-29 exemption to provide employment, training and promotional opportunities to First Nation’s people (SIGA Policy A04-105)

Community Involvement — Community involvement is an expression generally used to refer to the contributions of an individual or individuals to the community in which they reside. This may involve volunteer work, promotion of social causes, or donations to local charities

First Nations —  First Nations (as defined by section 16(II) of the Interpretation Act, AN ACT RESPECTING THE INTERPRETATION OF FEDERATION OF SASKATCHEWAN INDIAN NATIONS ENACTMENTS, FSIN, Oct. 2007, p.4.)

Status — A person who is registered as an Indian under the Indian Act.

Non-Status – A person who is not registered under the Indian Act yet had Aboriginal heritage

Full-time Student – as per the definition of a full time student by the institution they are attending.

Returning Student – A student who has completed the previous academic school year and  will attend again in the fall

Proof of Residency – Students who are from a First Nation not in Saskatchewan must show proof of residency in Saskatchewan to be considered.  This can be with a Saskatchewan utility bill dated for the academic year of which they have applied
