NAJA welcomes your 2015 National Native Media Conference Proposal to be submitted by Friday, Jan. 23, 2015 for consideration by the programming development committee.
2015 National Native Media Conference
Proposed sessions should be geared toward reporters, editors, publishers, videographers, and digital journalists attending the 2015 National Native Media Conference. Proposals should provide opportunities for skill-building, discussion and new insight to journalism, media and Native American topics.
Needs ideas on what to submit? NAJA will prioritize the following subjects areas:
1. Career and leadership development for journalists looking to land their first job, their dream job or move up in management; investigative journalism
2. Data journalism, meaning all things pertaining to how to find data, include it in stories, present it visually via maps and graphics, and problem-solve the big picture of issue of how and why Native Americans are left out of so many studies and polls that gather data to offer a snapshot of America.
3. Top Native news stories of the year that will continue to have an impact on Indian Country into 2016. Panel discussions, workshops and/or a Q&A with a leading newsmaker should provide attendees with insight on how to launch or improve their coverage moving forward.
4. Multimedia, social media, plus reporting, writing and editing in the digital age. Sessions should focus on how to make the most of new or existing tools to improve reader engagement and story reach for tribal newspapers and stations.
5. Proposals for a full-day communications / PR track will also be accepted.
NAJA aims to have 100 percent of workshops include an interactive component in which moderators or workshop leaders engage attendees in conversation or a hands-on learning experience that comes via a question-and-answer session, a chance for attendees to get feedback on any of their current projects or story pitches, or a chance to use test out new digital tools.
NOTE: NAJA may assist with A/V set-up but does not cover the costs for institutions presenting full- or half-days workshops, all of which will be scheduled on Thursday, July 9. NAJA is a small non-profit and due to budget constraints, cannot compensate presenters nor provide reimbursements for travel or lodging expenses.
