2015 Joan Donaldson – CBC News Scholarship
CBC News is proud to offer the 2015 CBC News Joan Donaldson Scholarship to aspiring journalists from across the country. Over the course of 16 weeks, scholars get valuable hands-on experience in all areas of multi-platform news working in digital, radio and television. Applicants can work primarily behind the scenes, on air or a combination of both. Specific assignments cannot be guaranteed. Many past Scholars have gone on to earn employment as CBC journalists.
Applicants must be:
- enrolled in their final year of a recognized undergraduate or graduate journalism program.
- recommended to the CBC by this school’s nomination coordinator.
- Canadian citizens or landed immigrants who can legally work in Canada.
- available to continue working at the CBC in Sept. 2015 following the end of the program.
Applicants should:
- demonstrate strong potential for producing journalism marked by intelligent observation, command of facts, understanding of context and clarity of expression
- demonstrate the interest and ability to practice journalism on all platforms
- have excellent academic performance in their journalistic training
- show their engagement with the world around them through activities such as community involvement and travel
- have a strong desire to work as public interest broadcast journalists after graduation
Please note:
- The program runs from May 4 – August 21, 2015. (dates to be confirmed)
- Scholars are paid about $600 per week
- Scholars are responsible for their own accommodation and living expenses
- The CBC pays work-related travel costs
- The CBC is committed to equity in employment and programming
What you need to do:
Inform your Nomination Coordinator that you intend to apply.
Submit the following material to your Coordinator. (Do NOT send material to the CBC.)
- Cover letter: Introduce yourself to the selection committee on one letter-sized page. Explain why you want to work at the CBC. Remember: CBC News is a fully integrated service and is interested in TV, radio and online skills.
- Resume: Include educational and professional background, community involvement, travel, work, languages and other personal experiences. (Two-page maximum.)
- Portfolio: Include links to personal or public websites (e.g. Youtube, Vimeo, etc.) Do NOT upload clips or pdf’s. One of each:
- Online writing
- Online multimedia (e.g. interactive, audio slideshow, etc.)
- Audio clip (under 5 minutes)
- Video clip (under 5 minutes) – We are interested in your field production work and reporting skills. Please do not submit samples of anchoring or newsreading.
You will then be contacted about whether your name will be submitted to the CBC for consideration.
The deadline for the above is Friday, October 10, 2015. No late submissions will be accepted.
