Dear Friend,
My name is Michele Schwab and I am a teacher at Balcarres Community School in Balcarres, Sk. Three years ago I started a partnership with SIAST Wascana Campus, our school and the Saskatchewan Arts Board to create a series of First Nations and Metis Role Model Posters focused on improving student literacy. To date, we have completed over 50 posters in the series. We work collaboratively with the Graphic Communications Department at SIAST to create a professional poster, which is proudly displayed in PVSD and our community.
This year, we were graciously chosen to receive a $10 000 ArtsSmart Grant. With these funds, we want to revamp the Role Model Poster Project to include not just the poster component, but a web site, video, and informational news articles. This is where you come in! I am presently seeking mentors to assist my students in learning these new and exciting avenues, and also mentors to enhance skills they already have.

Description |
| Role Model Poster | Students will create questions and then interview their assigned Role Model with a SIAST buddy. After the interview process, students will select a quote that is representative of the role model and the value they are chosen for. A photography student will also take photos of the role model. |
| Role Model Biography / News Article | A biography of each role model will be made available on the web site to assist people in learning about the role model. Further, students will write a news article to paint a picture of the role model themselves, or of their job or beliefs. |
| Role Model Web Page | Hopefully, this will become a resource for schools across the province to access information on First Nations and Metis Role Models, including biographies, poster with quote, video footage, and an article. |
| Role Model Video – A Day in the Life | Our role models lead diverse and varied lives; this video will showcase what the role model does and provide a glimpse into their daily life. |
